(WED) June 5, 2017 Connecting People to Nature |
Do you know what day it is on June 5th? Well it's World Environment Day. World Environment Day (WED) is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action and takes place every 5 June. It is a day for everyone, everywhere.
It is a day set aside by the UN since 1972 to provide us with an opportunity to add activities related to the environment for saving it and also motivate the peoples for taking initiative toward it.
Since its kickoff, global citizens have organized many thousands of events, from neighbourhood clean-ups, to action against wildlife crime, to replanting forests, etc.
In 1974 (about 43 years ago), the first WED was held with the theme "Only One Earth". Every World Environment Day has a new theme and different global host country (that gets to chose the theme), where the official celebrations take place. This year it is Canada.
The theme for 2017 is "Connecting People to Nature".
This year’s theme,
Connecting People to Nature, urges us to get outdoors and explore nature, appreciate its beauty and, reconnect with it by thinking about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it, and thus forward the message to protect the Earth that we all share.
This year's WED organisers are challenging us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship. Be it visiting one of your country’s national parks, strolling by one of your city’s green spaces, visiting a reserve, forest, or stream, etc.
Just explore what nature has to offer, like the billions of rural people around the world that spends every working day ‘connected to nature’ and appreciate to the fullness their dependence on natural water supplies and how nature provides their livelihoods in the form of fertile soil.
To celebrate this year's event, UN Environment is running a photo challenge, asking everyone to post a photo of your favourite protected area on
Twitter or
Instagram using the hashtag
#WithNature. You can also submit your photo via email. Along with your photo, UN Environment would love to know why you value your special place. A selection of the photos submitted will be shared on the
World Environment Day website, as well as on their Twitter and Instagram social accounts.
